Are you considering wood flooring? It is
becoming increasingly popular in kitchens, hallways,
living rooms, and dining rooms. You can choose between the real hardwoods, such as oak, ash
and natural maple; and laminated flooring such as Pergo.
Laminate or Hardwood?
Laminate flooring (£4-£16 per sqr metre) is increasing in popularity everyday,
but deciding whether the expense of hardwoods (£16-£40 per sqr metre) is worth
the extra over laminate is down to personal choice.
Laminate flooring is not easily repaired if it becomes is scratched. With a hardwood floor
scratch it can be can be sanded out. This is not so easy with laminate flooring
- touch-up and chip repair kits or even plank replacement may be required.
If scratching or scuffing is a common occurrence - if a dog is owned for example, hardwood provides
a more durable option to laminate.
Unlike hardwoods, laminate flooring will not yellow or fade over time. Once again though
- hardwood floors can be easily restored to their former glory. Hardwood floors do need
maintenance such as waxing or polish. Moisture levels affect both laminate flooring and
hardwood, but only laminate flooring that can be used in a kitchen or bathroom. Finally,
a special padding is required under laminate floors to reduce the floor's potential for noise.
Everybody's situation and needs are different, the use and location will determine which solution is best for you.
